We just got back from a beautiful retreat on the Turkish coast.

الحمدلله توفقنا في رحلة الصحة هذا العام ونتمنى ان تكونوا معنا العام المقبل

Thankfully, the universe conspired to give us great weather and great company all at once. I am very grateful and so excited to tell you all about it!

The ‘Schedule’

Between the beautiful backdrop of the Turkish mountain and the deep blue Aegean sea, we spent out days lazing from one juice to the next. Our juices were coming every hour and a half and they ranged from vegetable juices to fruit juice and even sea salt and wheatgrass shots.

Every morning, I would give a nutrition health talk for an hour and really stretch the group’s knowledge about food and diet.

The afternoons would be spent between massages and therapies, or walks along the beach.

And in the evening I would give another talk but of a different style completely. Evening talks revolve around the topic of meditation and self-centering. We focus on mind detox and emotional grounding. They were a great addition to our knowledge and a beautiful bonding experience for all.  Not to mention a lot of crying and laughing happened in this room!

The great news is that we had amazing weather, which is usually the case in Bodrum this time of year.  We had rain, sunshine, and everything in between!

We visited a little neighbouring town called Yalikavak, which is a charming little Turkish coastal town.

And of course, no AliaRetreat would be complete without a visit to the Gulturkbuku Monday market where we bought enough dried fruits and nuts to feed a whole army, more so because we were juice fasting and very tempted at that point.  We were eating with out eyes!

And last but not least, I was pressured and I agreed. We all wanted to try the delicious Turkish food before we left this charming little retreat town. So we had a final dinner that was more like a dream in its setting.  A true to treat to all our senses

We were eating with our mouths and feasting our eyes on the breathtaking views, and basking in the emotional comfort of the beautiful friendships that we formed.

To the group of AliaRetreats 2014, I must say that I was lucky to have all of you along this year. Remembering the trip still puts a smile on my face.

And a note that only the group members will understand: the grand finale of the airport bonanza still cracks me up! I wanted to put a photo of that incident but decided not to 🙂

I will miss you all and I look forward to having you all again with us next year!

We did it! And we’re back.. detoxed, rejuvenated, and energised!

What we did..

A couple of years ago, I had a magical experience detoxing in the Turkish coast. So I came up with this crazy idea of going again but this time taking some my clients with me (at least those who were crazy enough to trust me on this one!).

And this past April 2013, we did it!

I took a group of seven brave men and women on a trip of a lifetime – juice fasting, detoxing, and self-discovery! And of course, lots of bonding 🙂

We spent a wonderful 7 days at the LifeCo health centre in the breathtaking fishing town of Gulturkbuku (outside of Bodrum), in Turkey.

I’ve spoken a lot about what we were going to do on the #AliaRetreats website. Have a look there and also see all the videos that I had put up about the centre and juice fasting..

But back to the Bodrum 2013 group..

During our seven-day stay, we had:

  • Seven days of only fruit and vegetable juices (plus endless vegetable broths, herbal teas and water)
  • Lots of massages, facials, and pampering
  • Yoga, meditation, sauna, steam, salt room, and breathing sessions
  • Daily walks, support groups, and lectures
  • Afternoon excursions to the beach, neighbouring towns, and local markets
  • A final celebratory (and delicious) dinner on the day of breaking our juice fast!
  • And lots of bonding with the group (many friendships were born!)

I must say, I was very proud of the whole group. They all did really well and I was very impressed with their strength and willpower.

It’s not easy going on a juice fast, but the experience really adds richness to your life. You really get to know your body during the process and you also learn a lot about your personality and your own limits.

It is truly a journey of self-discovery. And as a bonus you get to cleanse your body of all of its toxins, get pampered in a beautiful setting, and of course, we all lost weight!

You Are NOT What You Eat!

I will have to disagree with the old saying: ‘you are what you eat’

The truth is that you are NOT what you eat, you are what you ABSORB.

If you take three people and give them each a beautiful organic salad, they will each get different benefits from it depending on the health of their digestive system.  If your digestive system is healthy, it will be able to digest and absorb all the benefits.

But what if it’s not?

If your digestion is not in top shape, then eating healthy might not be as useful.

Your digestive tract is a long, windy organ that collects a lot of ‘stuff’ over the years. If you’re not eliminating everything on a daily basis, the back-log can be a main cause of discomfort and disease.

There a lot more constipated people than you think; most of them living with it in silent suffering. Many of them think it’s normal to be constipated.

When you’re constipated, your body does not eliminate the daily toxins; and instead they end up going back into circulation and causing more damage.

To make sure that you are efficiently detoxing on a daily basis, make sure your digestive system is in top shape.  Start by drinking lots of water. Most people read through water advice and forget to implement. So I will write it again: make sure you’re drinking lots of water. Dehydration can really mess up digestion.

You can also add fibre into your diet, but please avoid wheat fibre which is very harsh and damaging. Get natural fibre from fruits, vegetables, and salads.

A professional detox programme can also help you get rid of years-worth of toxic build-up in the intestinal tract. Make sure you do that under the guidance of an expert.

Do You Need a Detox?

Do you ever wonder how many toxins we are exposed to on a daily basis? From the moment we wake up, we start our exposure to toxins.  Chemical toiletries, Aluminium deodorants, caffeine-loaded drinks, smoke, pollution, sprayed food, air fresheners, you name it…

The other day I made a list for one of my lectures of all the possible toxins in our daily life. And it was quite depressing. We live in quite a toxic environment.

So how can we all still be alive?

The great news is that our bodies come with an amazing built-in detox machine. If we didn’t have our very own detox system, the human race would be extinct by now.

Our detox system (which comprises mainly of the liver and the intestinal tract) is capable of getting rid of the toxins that we are exposed to on a daily basis.

Problems only occur when our detox system gets overloaded. This can happen when there are more toxins than the body can handle, or when a health problem makes the detox organs less efficient.

Have you ever experienced fatigue, brain fog, headaches, depression, or skin rashes? These could all be signs of toxic overload.  In fact, an overload of toxins can even make you gain weight!

In order to get your health back, make sure your detox system is alive. You can jump start it by analysing the toxins in your daily life and eliminating the ones you have direct control over (e.g. don’t use insect spray, or avoid amalgam mercury fillings). You can also help your detox system by eating more vegetables and salads for a few days, and having a massage and sauna to release existing toxins.

My Crazy Juice Fast Detox!

To me, fasting is like going into silence.  It is only when everything is quiet that the body can really start healing.

So I decided to venture into a 4-day juice fast detox.

Armoured with a lot of passion for health, and a huge curiosity for how the human body works, I packed my bags and headed to the Turkish coast for a 4-day attempt to rid my body of all its toxins.

So for a whole 4 days, I had nothing to eat.  I’m used to fasting during Ramadan but I’ve never had to do it for that long, continuous.  You eat nothing AT ALL for the duration of the detox.  The theory is that you rest the digestive system completely so that it gets the chance to clean itself and rid itself of toxins.

Throughout the day, however, you have lots and lots to drink: fruit juices, vegetable juices, wheatgrass juice, water, herbal teas, vegetable broths…

I must admit, there were times when I would be starving.

During the first couple of days, I got a surge of energy which I was very pleased with.  But on days 3 and 4, I experienced many detox symptoms such as nausea and extreme fatigue.  It felt like my body was undoing years of damage.  Yes, I had many years of horrible eating and lifestyle habits that I still pay for sometimes.  In fact, a health condition is what made me discover natural health and made me decide to become a nutritionist (but that’s another story..).

And while you fast and drink the juices, you also aid your body in eliminating the toxins more efficiently through the colon (colemas, colonics, etc.), daily steam and sauna, and lots of herbs and supplements.  Oh, and I made sure to get lots of sunlight, for the amazing detox benefits of vitamin D.

NOTE: DO NOT ATTEMPT A DETOX PROGRAMME ON YOUR OWN. MAKE SURE YOU DETOX UNDER PROFESSIONAL SUPERVISION. Not all detox programmes include a juice fast or colon cleansing.  You must find what suits you best and find a professional to help you with it.

COLON health

This is some of the stuff that people eliminate during a detox juice fast.  It’s called mucoid plaque.  It’s a combination of all kinds of toxins accumulated in your colon over the years that have been stuck to the walls of your digestive tract.  I know it looks disgusting, but once this stuff comes out, you feel 10 years younger.. well, roughly 😉

10 Things I Learned while on Detox

  • The detox process is completely unique to each person. My experience will not be yours.  Your reaction to the detox will depend on your level of toxins, your age, diet, lifestyle, and many other factors.
  • Everybody needs to detox, no matter how healthy you think you are.  Toxins accumulate from pollution, impure water, additives in food, hormone treatments, medication, chemicals in food, mercury amalgam fillings, vaccines, and many other sources.
  • A healthy body should be able to eliminate toxins through the liver, however, most people have more toxins than their body can handle, which makes it necessary for them to detox regularly.
  • We must respect the digestive system.  All disease and healing is reflected in the colon.  A healthy colon = a healthy body
  • Most people opt for quick solutions.  Cleaning the colon is one way to detox but your diet and lifestyle should also be changed to help you detox every day.  Are you drinking enough water, are you eating salads, are you lowering your exposure to processed foods and sugar.
  • The detox effects are not linear.  You can feel a high one minute and a slump the next.  Your body will go through cycles of energy and health.  You cannot predict your detox reaction.  You must just be a spectator, respect the miracle as it unfolds and ride the wave.
  • When you detox, it shows in your eyes, your skin, your energy levels, and even your behaviour.  Many of our ‘bad moods’ and depression are mere signs of an over-toxic body.
  • Most people don’t chew their food properly. I was guilty of that myself. I learned to chew each mouthful until it became a complete paste.  Oh, and don’t drink during the meal.  These two basic nuggets of wisdom can work wonders for your digestion.
  • Hunger is very much emotional.  Most of the time, I was hungry because I remembered food or smelled it, not because I was physically hungry.  Often, the fear of hunger is worse than the hunger itself.  Most people eat more than their body requires.
  • Nature and beautiful scenery can be very helpful when you’re detoxing. The Turkish coast is one of the most beautiful I’ve seen.  As one friend put it, “Just being in Turkey is detox”.
