Swine flu vaccine controversy (English & Arabic)

Very interesting news!  Apparently I am being ‘investigated’ by Bahrain’s Ministry of Health because of my views on the upcoming swine flu vaccine.

This past Tuesday, I wrote an article in the local paper (Gulf Daily News) about the potential dangers of the swine flu vaccine.  I posed several questions which I am still waiting for an answer for.  I was asking these questions both as a mother and a citizen who has the right to know.

In response to that article, read the link that came out in the GDN here today (Friday, Oct 2, 2009).  It’s very interesting.  At the time of writing this blog post, I still do not know if and when any of my questions will be answered.  This is what I originally asked:

  • How safe is the vaccine and where are the studies that prove its safety?
  • Thiomersal and Squalene are both controversial ingredients in the vaccine, how do we know they’re safe?
  • How will you measure the effectiveness of the vaccination campaign if you are not testing for swine flu?
  • Why are we targeting society’s most vulnerable (pregnant women, children, elderly) with an untested, potentially toxic vaccine?

Below, you can find the original article that I wrote.  If you would rather see it on Tuesday’s Gulf Daily News page, here it is.

Read below and let me know what you think..

****************

My original article and questions

I have recently read lots of newspaper statements from health authorities about the swine flu vaccine.  The statements claim that it is totally safe, that the only side-effects could be redness and irritation at the site of injection, and that the controversy over its safety is not accurate.

Given that there’s a big debate over the safety of these vaccines, I feel that it is only fair to present both sides of the argument.  Presenting one-sided arguments not only presents an inaccurate picture, but also undermines today’s consumer who is much more savvy and better informed due to the advancements in technology.

I am aware that the decisions of the authorities are made with very good intentions and that the safety of the people is always top priority.  With that in mind, I would like to pose a few questions, both as a mother and as a Nutritional Therapist.

Vaccine contents and side-effects

If you say that the vaccine is ‘totally safe’, how do you justify it’s controversial contents?  The most controversial being the preservative thiomersal, which contains 49% mercury.  Numerous studies have proven the toxicity of mercury (which is one of the most toxic heavy metals in nature).

Pandemrix, one of the two vaccines Bahrain is planning to use in the fight against Swine Flu, contains controversial preservative Thimerosal, despite it being a mercury-based compound.

According to numerous studies, including a 2003 US Congressional report on ‘Mercury in Medicine’; it is claimed that Thimerosal can be linked to the development of autism and other brain development disorders.

If you claim that mercury is not toxic, why is it no longer legal in the US to use mercury in vaccines?  Why is it illegal in Norway to use mercury amalgam fillings?  Why is mercury coming up over and over again in tests done on autistic children?  Why are we supposed to be very careful touching and inhaling mercury while you say it’s ok to inject into our bloodstreams; worse yet, inject it into our kids!

The list of contents of these vaccines is truly scary.  Flu vaccines contain various dangerous ingredients such as Aluminium, Ethylene glycol, Formaldehyde, and other toxic substances.  But what’s even more dangerous is Squalene, the immune adjuvant added to this most recent swine flu vaccine to ‘increase it’s effectiveness’.  It is added to trigger a strong immune reaction, get the job done faster, and reduce the amount of vaccine required per dose (making it easier for mass vaccination campaigns). But has anyone stopped to think of the effects that these adjuvants have? Squalene causes the immune system to react in a powerful, unnatural and potentially dangerous way to the presence of the virus we’re being vaccinated against.  Various studies, including a 2000 study published in the American Journal of Pathology raised questions about the role of adjuvants in chronic inflammatory diseases such as arthritis.

If these vaccine ingredients were harmless, why would vaccine makers have total legal protection from any legal cases for any side-effects that the vaccines might cause in people?

The US Government signed a document in June making US federal officials and all vaccine manufacturers immune from any legal liability if its citizens suffer adverse reactions to the H1N1 virus.

Where are the studies that have been done on these vaccines to prove their safety (how can they even provide study results in such a short time?)  What are the long-term side-effects of these vaccines?  How can you be sure that the only side-effects are ‘redness and swelling of the site of injection’ when you haven’t waited long enough to find out what the long-term side-effects are?  Many sources state that the side-effects of these vaccines appear after one year of injection; what if that’s true?  What will people do in a year’s time when they notice strange conditions in their kids or their newborns?

What will happen when, within that year, there is an increase in allergies, in Guillain-Barre syndrome (linked to previous swine flu vaccine), brain inflammation, central nervous system disorders, or autism and learning difficulties.  Will you link these conditions to the vaccine?

How effective is the vaccine

When you vaccinate against swine flu, you have to check and see whether actual cases of swine flu reduced. How will you check the effectiveness of your vaccination campaign if health centres and hospitals are not checking for swine flu and assuming all flus are the H1N1 virus?

Authorities are claiming that the swine flu vaccine is similar to the regular flu vaccine.  But various studies, including two studies in 2008 published in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine and another in the Lancet, have proven respectively that flu vaccinations had no impact on flu-related hospitalisations or doctor visits, and no reduction of risk of pneumonia in the elderly.  How is the swine flu vaccine different?  And what will happen when new strains of the virus form? Another vaccine? And what if somebody already got swine flu, will you ask them to take the vaccine as well?

Are we getting swine flu because of a deficiency in standardised vaccine?

Let’s put things into perspective.  Death from swine flu is not common.  In fact, swine flu deaths have been far less than deaths caused by the regular flu.

According to the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) latest figures as of September 20, there have been 300,000 laboratory confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus and 3,917 deaths.

Compare this to WHO’s latest calculations for regular influenza outbreaks, which estimates  around three to five million cases of severe flu-related illness, and about 250,000 to 500,000 deaths annually.

Furthermore, most people who react badly to swine flu are those with pre-existing conditions or low immunity.  If we know that swine flu is worse for people with low immunity, does it make sense to inject those people with vaccines containing toxic substances?  Wouldn’t that lower their immunity further?

Moreover, does it make sense to target the most vulnerable people in society with these vaccines?  Pregnant women, children, and the elderly should be kept as far as possible from toxins and vaccines.  They are already immune-compromised; they are more likely to develop vaccine complications due to their slower detoxification systems, immature immunity (in kids), and nutrient deficiencies.

People with lowered immunities should be most vigilant.  The swine flu vaccine could lower their immunity further.  It might protect them from swine flu, but it will have a severe impact on their overall health.  In the process of preventing one illness, we’re creating many others.

This is not prevention, it is over-medicating.

When people get sick, it is not because they are deficient in vaccine.  People get sick because their immune systems are weak.  So wouldn’t it be better to invest in helping people take care of their own health?  Teaching people how to boost their immunity, how to eat better, and how to lead a healthier lifestyle is a lot more beneficial.  The advice of ‘wash your hands’ and ‘take the vaccine’ is not enough to help people out of disease pandemics.

I would much rather see our health authorities promote health by increasing awareness, sponsoring workshops, improving school canteens, and advocating real prevention of disease using food, vitamins, herbs, exercise and various other natural remedies.

Make an informed decision

I don’t know if the swine flu vaccine will be mandatory.  However, I would like to think that we live in a place where people have the freedom to choose what they want injected into theirs or their kids’ bodies.

I would advise everyone to do the research before making a decision.  There is a lot of controversy for a reason.  People must be informed.  It’s true that there is a lot of false information on the internet, but there’s also a lot of good accurate information there too.  People no longer depend on their doctors to dictate what they should do.  The average person today is a lot more informed and that’s the way it should be.

Use your common sense and take control of your own health.

For Arabic readers

For the Arabic readers, here’s what I said in the Arabic version (which was difficult to get into the Arabic newspapers)

  1. Many Physicians are opposing swine flu vaccination. Flu shots = money, not safety. Don’t believe the hype! -Dr. Jake http://wp.me/pC1DX-2S

  2. Are you being investigated/targeted by MoH?? Total utter shame by the government! We r with u!

  3. I’ve received a surprising amount of heat from my colleagues, support from many, many areas, and honestly wonder if the professional smack-down will be delivered to me soon from the “powers that be”. My statements regarding questions of vaccine safety are viewed by many as quite heretical and even dangerous given the current standards.

For me however, the issue is more of a question of can we as individuals make our own choices in this world? Can I as a man think deeply about an unclear situation (vaccines and H1N1) and choose what I feel is best for me and my family?

  4. Gosh!!! This is really ridiculous on part of the doctor who announced the action!! Rather than investigating on the vaccine, they intend to investigate on you. It’s really hilarious and laziness on part of the investigating doctor on you. When other countries can decribe about the issues related to the vaccine, why can’t we?

  5. I admired your article when I read it and forwarded it to all my friends. I 100% support you.
I think the ministry should have collaborated with you instead of fighting you. Shame on them!

    Regards
    Maha

  6. Looks like you hit a nerve! Good for you! We all have the right to question authorities… they are not God, and not all-knowing. They are mostly politicians, in fact. So, yes, do continue on your mission and strike more nerves! You have my support.

  7. Bitter Chocolate

I have read all and found no basis for any argument that you overstepped. So you should be safe and harmless from the results of any ministerial probes, if they over happen. As a common citizen and father of minors, I would ask the same questions as you have and no one could hold me as having overstepped. Now the boundaries for a professional citizen like you, Dr. Alia, should be wider, i.e. never more restrictive than the boundaries of the common citizen.
If I were an official at the ministry, I would swiftly frame any ministerial probe (1) to hold that you had not overstepped; (2) to demand that answers be provided, reliably, to the questions/concerns/issues which you have raised; (3) to cancel or delay or suspend shipment of vaccines ordered so far, until all suspicions about it are cleared and then to proceed in the manner dictated by the way those suspicions are cleared – this can mean getting a full refund if payment were made (which should not have been made); (3) to recommend that vaccination should be optional; (4) to demand that a campaign be consummated which informs public of all the risks involved and the options the householder have including the option to take the risk of contracting H1N1 and treating it in the way we treat the common flu, emphasizing the viability (from a medicinal statistical view point). Also emphasizing that all Bahraini communities are readily accessible, including the medical/health community – when/if any help is needed from that community.
Having said that, we hope only for the minimums, i. e. that you be held harmless from any ministerial action. We know these days and as before and as trends are pointing that, too few decisions are made based on the core and essential purposes and considerations. But most of them are made based on certain political reasons so dethatched from the core and essential material that they are totally alien to and contradictory with the interest of the Bahraini public. Such alien considerations include but are not limited to stupid advertising and/or stupid public relations whose scope include foreign bodies and organizations and multinational corporations. Oh we have such apparatuses as a totally ineffectual parliament; lady ministers; representatives in the legislative body of a minority whose numbers are well within 50 person (including adults and minors). The list is long and too obvious and perhaps to embarrassing to some interest groups.

  8. excatly !! do they have an answer for ur questions, it is every mother’s questions .. !!!

  9. I have been trying to have my friends also read up on the H1N1 to make an educated descision on Tamaflu and vaccinations. We all need to talk with our primary care givers and take it from there. God gave us all brains and a free will so we need to use it.

  10. Dear Alia,

I had a blast laughing at the “investigation” article in the paper. While it is not easy to accept that MOH are investigating you, it really shows a big weakness that they have to resort to an invesitgation in response to your article. If they were confident that the vaccine was not harmful, they simply should have put imperical evidence on the table and that would close the matter. People can decide for themselves from that point onwards.
If I or God forbid, my family contract swine flu, I know where I am going, straight to Alia.

    Regards,

    Mohamed

  11. H1N1 Vaccines and Your Children: The details are in the fine print! http://wp.me/pC1DX-34

WARNING: Safety and effectiveness of Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine have not been established in pregnant women or nursing mothers or children <6 months of age. References from the CDC included in the above link. Seeing is believing so take a look not only for yourself, but for your family as well.

  12. You know, Alia, that really made me laugh… this is the same government who puts sleeping nurses in every station in the airport who supposedly monitor and screen the people coming into Bahrain. Then when they make you fill the form, they don’t even bother looking at it or entering any data and casually flick it over their shoulder at the ever-increasing pile of garbage around their desks at the airport immigration counters! then they have the nerve to say they are taking strict precautions and to top it all investigate people who are hitting a raw nerve and questioning their decisions! Ignore them! We support you! I am 100% with u!

  13. Thank you for your insight and very informative post. I found this a while back …
    http://stevex09.wordpress.com/2009/09/11/whats-in-the-h1n1-swine-flu-vaccine/?preview=true&preview_id=2178&preview_nonce=9a67e2fffc

Lots of good stuff in there! (I’m being facetious)…

  14. As if the MOH officials didn’t get enough publicity out of the swine flu issue, it seems they are still hungry for making the headlines but they ran out of news so they decided to pick on you. Frankly speaking I don’t see how they can stop anyone from saying their opinion, unless they will ask the Ministry of Information to block your site and all other sites carrying the words vaccine and swine in one sentence including the MOH web site (heeeheeee).

  15. Alia, Ignore them…. They have nothing else to do..All you did as a citizen is that you wanted more clarification and that is what all of us want.. You are speaking on our behalf…All the best..Allah yahfethech..

  16. Everyone needs to know the benefits and the long time side effects of the vaccine. I appreciate your stand to challenge the MOH to bring out the truth. Your advise on building our immune system by taking care of our eating habits & exercise is what God wants us to do. Keep up your good work.

  17. Hi Alia- m sure if I were still in Bahrain I would be loosing my residency visa over this one. Stand in your truth!!!
By the way, I have 2 friends whose children have swine flu in the US…they are fine. Here in Germany, my pediatrician. advised us NOT to get the vaccine!(not that I would have gotten it anyway)
    SATYA-truth- thanks for speaking it!

  18. Hi Alia,

I read your article and keep reading your blog….I totally agree with you we have no guarantee if these vaccines are effective…I know cases where children have taken inoculations since their birth….but have contracted infections later in their lives…..As parents we feel that we have done the best for our kids…….and I feel we take it for granted that since all the precautions we have taken nothing will happen…and one fine day your life changes completely and one doubts the process they have gone through when their kids were small……..I strongly urge all parents please don’t blindly believe that all vaccines will safeguard your child…even if they take vaccines keep your mind open…

  19. Still complecated by many views dr..but yours the one i feel most logical
    bes regard

  20. I HAD A SWINE FLU VACCINE WITH SQUALENE IN A GULF COUNTRY IN DEC 2009 AND HAVE BEEN SUFFERING FROM FIBROMYALGIA AND COSTOCHONDRITIS FOR THE PAST 9 MONTHS

  21. I actually like to focus on bumping up my immune system over fall and winter instead of relying on traditional medicine and flu shots which have questionable efficacy anyway. I increase my intake of probiotics to flood my internal system with good bacteria, leaving less room for bad bacteria and bacterial infections and amping up my body’s power to handle viral infections. Just MHO. This is a blog on the probiotic blend that I use: http://www.chrisbyrnes.com/2011/09/23/probiotics-this-fall-for-good-immune-health/

  22. I am not sure where you are getting your information, but great topic.
I needs to spend some time learning much more or understanding more.

Thanks for great info I was looking for this info for my mission.
